How much do you really know about your lymphatic system and the role it plays in your tension, pain, energy, and overall health? If your answer is “not much,” you’re not alone — and you’re exactly who we wrote this article for.
Early in our Yoga Therapy days, we associated lymphatics almost exclusively with breast cancer and lymphedema. Because we hadn’t personally dealt with those conditions, we assumed lymphatic work wasn’t relevant for us.
We were wrong.
What we’ve learned from Dr. Perry Nickelston of Stop Chasing Pain has been nothing short of revolutionary. His work suggests that lymphatics will be one of the biggest conversations in health and wellness over the next decade — and we agree. We have seen firsthand that lymphatic stagnation affects almost everyone, and when we begin to stimulate and support the lymphatic system, the results are profound.
According to Ozdowski & Gupta (2023), your lymphatic system has three essential roles:
This system is constantly working to keep you healthy —but it has one major limitation:
It has no pump. Unlike your circulatory system, which relies on the heart, your lymphatic system depends on movement, breath, muscle contraction, and fascial glide to keep fluid flowing.
Your body is a pressure system. Lymph fluid drains primarily at the collarbones into the subclavian veins:
There are over 700 lymph nodes in the body — and more than one‑third of them are located from your collarbones to the top of your head. This means that tension, poor posture, restricted breathing, and somatic reflex patterns can dramatically affect lymphatic flow.
According to Fritz, Chaitow & Hymel (2008): “Fluid moves from the interstitial space into the lymph capillaries by means of a pressure mechanism exerted by respiration, peristalsis of the large intestine, the compression of muscles, and the pull of the skin and fascia during movement.”
Translation: If you don’t move well, breathe well, or release muscular tension, your lymphatic system cannot do its job.
These are the most common symptoms and many people experience several at once.
If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone — and there is something you can do about it.
As SomaYoga Therapists, we look for three primary reflex patterns in the body. One of the most common is the Red Light Reflex — a protective, stress‑driven pattern of where the front body contracts and shortens pulling the shoulders forward.
This pattern:
And all of this blocks lymphatic drainage in the most important areas of the body:
When lymph can’t drain, waste gets stuck. When waste gets stuck, symptoms appear. When symptoms persist, dis‑ease develops. This is why lymphatic work and somatic work must go hand‑in‑hand.
If you’re experiencing any of the 10 signs above, the best place to start is with BIG 6 Lymphatic Stimulation Sequence that we have linked below. This sequence was developed by Dr. Perry Nickelston of Stop Chasing Pain.
It’s simple. It’s fast. It’s incredibly effective.
And when combined with SomaYoga and somatic nervous system regulation, it becomes a powerful tool for:
Your lymphatic system is one of the most overlooked systems in the body — yet it plays a massive role in your pain, tension, energy, and long‑term health. When you support your lymphatic flow and your somatic nervous system, you create the conditions for deep, lasting healing.
Your healing is not only possible — it’s waiting for you.
