Being in pain is exhausting and being in pain and trying to keep up with the demands of a busy holiday season can feel impossible. Pay it forward to yourself this December – make self care a priority during the busiest time of the year.
The month of December brings with it longer to do lists, more family obligations and typically not enough time to rest and restore. The focus becomes about others and we can easily lose track of our own needs during this busy time of year.
Our challenge to you is to pay it forward to yourself this December. It’s not a huge ask but it can feel like it is. This month plan little acts of love and kindness directed towards yourself. Yes you read that right, towards yourself! And then we want to hear all about it, so send us a quick note and let us know what you planned and executed for yourself.
The Yoga Sutras teach us that the first step on the path into suffering is ignorance or forgetting who we are. We forget that we are a thread in the tapestry of Divine wisdom. The yogis teach us that our inherent nature is that of perfection. Our true nature is that of peace and harmony, we are Love. Pure and perfect.
We suffer because we have covered over this perfection with layers and layers of behaviour patterns, beliefs, likes and dislikes informed by our past wounding, traumas and life experiences. The yogis go on to explain that this path of attaching to our likes, dislikes and resisting change perpetuate our deep sadness and suffering.
These layers can present as pain and tension in our bodies and minds, inhibiting the flow of energy in the body. We can feel overly stressed, exhausted and overwhelmed. Everything we do takes more effort mentally, emotionally and physically.
The solution is simply, love yourself, pay it forward to yourself this December.
How often do you do this?
Where do you start?
Little Acts of Love and Kindness
It is simple. Gift your future self with little acts of love and kindness as the first step to learning how to truly love yourself.
Here are a couple of examples to get you started:
- What if you tidied your room and made your bed every morning so that at the end of the day when your future self is exhausted your bedroom feels fresh and inviting? How wonderful would that feel?
- Book your future self an hour off to take a luxurious soak in the tub, why not book the time out in your calendar? Create a spa experience. Prepare the space with candles, bath salts and music ahead of time so that all you need to do is show up, fill the bathtub with wonderfully warm water and relax while listening to your favourite music.
These examples may seem small in terms of effort however the symbolism is important.
You have heard the saying “put your own oxygen mask on first”. When we constantly serve others at the expense of our own wellbeing everyone loses.
The fact is that we need to love ourselves and support our own health and wellbeing first so that we can show up fully and authentically for every moment of our lives.
As you learn to pay it forward to yourself this December, to love yourself fully, you learn what ease and flow feels like. Ease of breath and movement, and ease in the body, translates into ease in one’s life.
Let’s start a self love movement. So get on social media and hashtag #iloveme and start sharing the simple things you do daily to lovingly care for your future self.
