Plantar Fasciitis presents in the soles of the feet but it is part of a much bigger problem in the body. It is most often caused by a chronic shortened pattern of the muscles on the back side of the body. While rolling out your feet with a tennis ball, taping your heels or wearing orthotics provides temporary relief, the best way to address plantar fasciitis (long term) is to regain full control of the contraction and release of the Green Light (back line) muscles of your body.
Do you suffer from plantar fasciitis?
This condition explains what happens when the plantar (fascia on the sole(s) of the feet) becomes inflamed and pulled tight up the legs from the center of the back body, preventing the natural cushioning action of the feet to no longer work properly.
Last Thursday’s Online SomaYoga Therapy class was focussed on just that – bringing awareness to and releasing the extensor and rotator muscles of the back line of the body.
Following the principle of ‘working from the center outwards’, the class started to bring the brain’s awareness to the muscles that run along both sides of the spine (erector spinae muscles) in relationship to the flexor muscles of the belly. The Pandiculations that we worked with included Arch and Flatten and Back Lift. Next the movements involved Pandiculations to restore functional resting length to the hamstrings, calves and then the feet. We then practiced embodying the new length in the back line (extensor) muscles of the body by practicing every day movements such as forward folding to load the dishwasher or to tie your shoe.
The best way to address plantar fasciitis and other commonly diagnosed symptoms is to restore true functional movement by addressing your entire body as a movement system, not as a stand along body part with a problem.
